Copper Woman Mask by Herb Rice

The Copper Woman Mask is 6" X 8" X 2.5" carved in Vancouver Island White Pine with hammered copper, horse hair and stranded copper.

Copper woman was the first mother for the people of the Pacific West Coast.

At the dawn of time Copper Woman solved the problem of being alone. After coming together with the first man, after giving birth to many daughters and sons, after she has lived and learned all that she can, she decides itís her time to leave this plane forever, to become part of the spirit world. Copper Woman has passed on a legacy of spiritual, physical and mental strength training for the daughters of the future.   Inspired by:   Anne Cameron: Daughters of Copper Woman 1981

In Herb's Coast Salish culture, masks are an essential part of ceremonial life.

This mask and the interpretation are the creation of the artist, Herb Rice.
