Sisuitl Drum by Herb Rice

This Sisuitl Drum is 14" in diameter. It is constructed on a woodframe with a raw hide stretched over it. It is a warrior's drum.

In Herb's Coast Salish culture, the drum is used in traditional ceremony. The drum represents the heartbeat of our mother, The Earth.

The painting on this drum, depicts the two-headed sea monster.     The central figure is the main design and the two sea-wolf designs on either side are appendages.

The Sisuitl is one of the most frequently depicted supernatural characters.     It represents protection for the warrior and it is the guardian for the house of the Sky People.

The drum and the interpretation are the creation of the artist, Herb Rice.
