Salmon Hunting in the Kelp
by Herb Rice

Salmon Hunting in the Kelp

This piece is 16”x 4” x 20”high. Carved in yellow cedar, the 3D salmon is surrounded by kelp made of burnished steel.

The salmon represents survival continuity and fertility of body mind and spirit.     In this situation we are putting together the past and the present, the metal kelp (the present) is wrapping the salmon which is the past.    As the hunter, the salmon is searching for its future through the kelp and to maintain survival, continuity and fertility, it must become part of its environment to the fullest, only in this way can it share its' millennia of knowledge.
