Grandfather Mask by Herb Rice

The Grandfather Mask is 9" X 14" carved in Pine.

In Herb's Coast Salish culture, The Grandfather represents the connection to the knowledge of the elders and the traditions practiced by everyone. The Grandfather spirit also assists in bringing "good medicine" to the "Potlatch gathering" and helping in the work that was being carried on in the name of the family.

The First Nations of the west coast believed that their ancestors were with them in spirit at all times. Masks such as this connected them individually and at the "Potlatch" to this spirit. A mask of this sort was always connected to a song. The matriarchal side would be the only ones to sing the song in accompanyment to the mask.

This mask and the interpretation are the creation of the artist, Herb Rice.
