40" tall, carved in red cedar with copper inlay, The Maiden represents Tsonoqua, the Wild Woman of the Woods.
In Herb's Coast Salish culture, Tsonoqua is well known. With her siren-like voice she would lure children to her, capture them and put them in her basket on her back. She would take them to her home to cook up and eat. Smart children would be able to take advantage of her need to sleep regularly and escape.
This piece has horsehair and copper as part of her makeup.
The totem and the interpretation are the creation of the artist, Herb Rice.
