|The Speaker Mask is 10" X 6" X 3" carved in pine.
The 2 eagles facing each other on the forehead of the mask, represent the balance of freedom and vision. Freedom respects the individual freedom. When this is strong one can share knowledge and respect with all Life; Vision is knowing that every decision made effects at least seven generations of the people. The speaker has the voice and training to present the story to the fullest for who he is representing. The feather on the left temple represents a respect for life. The Abalone in the centre of the forhead is the spiritual eye that is being held by both eagles.
In Herb's Coast Salish culture, The Speaker speaks for the people. The Speaker Mask was carved for the lawyer representing the Lakota Sioux.
This mask and the interpretation are the creation of the artist, Herb Rice.
