Sun Mask by Herb Rice

The Sun Mask is 18" X 18" carved in yellow cedar.

In Herb's Coast Salish culture, the sun represents the life giving force. All life is dependant on the sun fullfilling its job. The seven spokes represent the cycles in life, the directions( north, south, east, west,up,down and inwards). For the Cowichan Peoples, of the Salish tribes, the original word "Khowutzun" translated means, "the place where people warm their backs".

This mask and the interpretation are the creation of the artist, Herb Rice.
