Long Life, Freedom and Vision through Experience
by Herb Rice

Long Life, Freedom and Vision through Experience is a 8 ½ foot 22inch wall totem carved in Vancouver Island White Pine.

It depicts a Raven on top, and a 3 figure Killer Whale. The Killer Whale’s Pectoral fin is transformed into a Raven’s Head and the Whales Tail is transformed into an Eagle.

In Herb's Coast Salish culture, the Killer Whale represents long life, not so much in terms of time but in how you live your life, to the fullest in every moment.

The eye in the center of the whale is a Spiritual Eye, reminding us of our connection with creator and creation.

Eagle represents freedom and vision.   Freedom is acknowledging your own freedom first, When you are strong in this then you can share your knowledge with your environment.    Vision is knowing that each decision you make in life will effect at least seven generations of your people.

Raven represents the Trickster or the Teacher and whether or not we have learned from our past experiences.

The Moon in the wing of the Raven represents transition.

The wall totem and the interpretation are the creation of the artist, Herb Rice.
